The defence supply chain is multi-tiered: system integrators develop complex weapon and delivery systems and manage a broad network of Tier 1 and Tier 2/3 suppliers – ranging from machining and forming and stamping technologies to the manufacture of welded assemblies. Elisental supplies both levels of this chain to the same high quality standards.

For development, procurement and certification at system integrators: you specify materials for new programmes or qualify a secondary supplier. We provide the technical expertise, the approved welding wire and – via ELISENTAL.concept – the joint development of special alloys.

For manufacturing suppliers (machining, forming technology, welded assemblies): You manufacture components or assemblies for a system house or a Tier 1 supplier and require aluminium wire, rods or welding wire as documented, traceable raw materials – so that you can pass this documentation on to your own client without any gaps.

What aluminium products does Elisental supply to the security and defence industry?

Elisental supplies aluminium wire, bars and aluminium welding wire to the security and defence industry. The products are used, amongst other things, in land, air and naval defence systems, personal equipment systems, mobility and engineering systems, as well as in communications and sensor systems. All products are manufactured at the Neuenrade site and can be adapted to meet customer-specific requirements.

What makes aluminium a suitable material for defence applications?

Aluminium combines low weight with high strength and good formability. This is a decisive advantage for applications in the security and defence industries: components become lighter without losing stability – which is important, for example, for personal equipment or mobile systems. Added to this is good electrical conductivity for communication and sensor systems, as well as natural corrosion resistance, which makes the material suitable for use even under adverse conditions. Aluminium is also durable, sustainable and recyclable.

How does Elisental ensure security of supply?

Through its joint venture in Esal Rod Alloys, S.A. in northern Spain, Elisental has access to its own source of wire rod, the raw material. This makes the company less dependent on global supply bottlenecks and enables it to influence quality and alloy development right from the raw material stage. Combined with its manufacturing operations in Germany, this creates a supply chain that runs largely within Europe – an increasingly important criterion for procurement decisions in the security and defence industries.

Is Elisental a German manufacturer?

Yes. Drahtwerk Elisental W. Erdmann GmbH was founded in 1919 and has been manufacturing at its site at Werdohler Straße 40, 58809 Neuenrade, ever since. The company employs around 120 staff and supplies customers worldwide. Manufacturing in Germany is a particularly relevant factor for customers in the security and defence industries when it comes to documented provenance and short lines of communication.

What approvals and certifications does Elisental hold?

Elisental is certified as a company to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001, as well as to EN 13479 and TÜV V 1153. The aluminium welding wire is also largely TÜV- and DB-approved, whilst part of the range also holds LR (Lloyd’s Register) or BWB approvals.

For which applications are Elisental’s aluminium welding wire suitable?

The aluminium welding wire is used, amongst other things, in vehicle, ship and frigate construction, as well as in container construction and the aerospace industry. Elisental also supplies suitable welding wire as a consumable for additive manufacturing processes such as WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing) – for example, for the production of spare parts in the field. Which alloy is suitable in each individual case depends on the specific application, the required approvals and the manufacturing process, and is clarified during a personal consultation.

Can bespoke alloys and dimensions be developed?

Yes. Through its ELISENTAL.concept consultancy and development service, Elisental works with customers to develop aluminium alloys for specific requirements – for example, for components with particular demands in terms of strength, formability or tolerances. Thanks to its links to its own source of raw materials in Spain, the alloy composition can be influenced right from an early stage of development.

Does Elisental also supply NATO partner countries or international customers?

Elisental primarily targets customers in Germany and the European Union. Many projects also have a link to NATO, for example where components are intended for systems procured or deployed in accordance with NATO standards. Enquiries from other European countries are welcome; details regarding export matters are clarified on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the customer.

Are there any reference projects in the defence industry?

Elisental already supplies companies in the aerospace and defence sectors. As customers in this sector often do not wish to be named, references are deliberately formulated in a strategic manner without specifying specific customer or project names. Upon request, interested parties can be provided with further insights into comparable projects, insofar as this is possible within the framework of the relevant confidentiality agreements.

What about traceability and documentation?

Traceability is a fundamental requirement in regulated sectors such as the security and defence industries. Elisental documents the manufacturing processes throughout the supply chain and can therefore verify, for each batch, the conditions under which a product was manufactured. This facilitates approval by internal certification bodies and welding engineers, and ensures transparency for end customers and regulatory authorities.
